What stays in your browser
Answer matching happens on your device. Progress, results, nickname, best score, sound and music preferences and a random device identifier are stored in local storage. Clearing this site's browser data removes them.
Results and challenge links
Finishing a run saves its nickname, question and answer identifiers, scores, time and a hash of the random device identifier in our database. The hash lets the same browser rename its own run. A challenge link makes the run's nickname, answers and score accessible to anyone with that link. Do not use a personal name if you prefer anonymity. We do not ask for your email.
If saving a result fails, the portable challenge link contains the nickname and answer identifiers itself. Sharing, copying, downloading cards and opening social apps are your choice. Those apps apply their own privacy policies.
Rejected answers
If you choose to report a rejected answer, we store its question, normalized answer text and a count. This report does not include your nickname, device identifier or IP address in our database.
Analytics and session replay
Production pages use Plausible on analytics.howtosurvive.ai to count page views and game events without cookies. Game events include progress, answer bands and scores, and do not include your typed answers, nickname or full challenge link.
We also use Google Analytics 4 for traffic and engagement measurement and Microsoft Clarity for session replay and interaction analysis. These services can process technical information, browser and device information, page addresses, approximate location, usage events and pseudonymous identifiers, and may use browser cookies. Answer and nickname fields are explicitly masked for Clarity. Canvas animation may not appear in recordings.
These scripts are disabled in local development and automated browser audits. Blocking analytics does not prevent playing. You can manage site cookies and storage through your browser settings. See Google's privacy policy and Microsoft's privacy statement for their handling of data.
Hosting and cached files
Cloudflare hosts the site, game assets and D1 result database. Requests reveal network information such as IP address, browser and requested URL to hosting and analytics providers. Our application does not store IP addresses with game results. A service worker caches game assets on your device for faster loading.
Contact and controls
You can mute sounds, disable music, use your system's reduced-motion preference and clear browser data. For removal requests, open an issue in the project repository with the run link; do not post sensitive information.
